The Discovery Program is a skills building program designed to assist young people (12-16 years) to cope and manage daily life stressors.

This position will form part of the Barwon-South Western Region Disability Services team and will focus on driving and supporting key projects relating to the service reorientation agenda.

Introducing the new Post Placement Resource Centre to the broader community of professionals, including youth workers, teachers and student welfare coordinators. You’d be aware of the growing number of students in foster care, kinship care, permanent care or who have been adopted either locally, or from overseas.

The scholarship provides financial assistance to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who are intending to undertake study or are undertaking study in an entry level qualification at an Australian university or TAFE (certificate IV and above).

The 2011-2012 funding round for the Youth Development and Support Program is now open. This year the Youth Development and Support Program will focus funding on projects under the theme ‘Youth arts and creative enterprises’. Applications should demonstrate how the projects will enable young people to engage in the arts and creative enterprises. These projects will enhance wellbeing and build resilience of young people and/or demonstrate the social and economic benefits of engaging with the arts and the broader community. Applications from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations are strongly encouraged.

This Newsletter is part of the regional AOD Youth Capacity Building Role funded by Department of Health, Mental Health, Drugs and Regions.

Activities which will be eligible for funding include sporting facilities and child care facilities. Funding is provided by the Department of Regional Australia, Regional Development & Local Government. Funding amounts range from $5000, 000 to $25 million.

Community events, aimed at building strong relationships between young people from disadvantaged areas and their families, will be funded across the country through an Australian Government initiative – think family, think community.

As you are all aware community grant programs typically offer funds that range in size from $5000 to $1,000.000. At any given time there are approximately 1500 grants available to assist community groups. However these all sit on hundreds of different websites and forever changing. In response the database called Community Grant Guru with all of the grants listed in one place has been developed.

Solution-Oriented Therapy is one of the most popular of the new short-term therapies, it has become popular so quickly because of its accessibility and simplicity. It focuses on the positive things in the lives of people with problems, rather than on their pathology. This form of therapy avoids jargon and diagnostic labelling and favours finding simple solutions even to complex problems. Most people actually have the solutions to their problems, but it is as if they are behind a locked door and don't have the key.

An excellent resource for use in youth and community wellbeing and support programs, Not So Straight has been developed by members of FPV's same sex attracted support group for young people to raise awareness of the issues faced by same sex attracted youth.

Many young people struggle with issues such as anxiety, aggression, disability and bullying through the pre teen and teen years. “I Just Want To Be Me� is designed to assist such children and provides a valuable new resource for Counsellors, Teachers, Parents, Therapists and anyone dealing with them.

Under the National Partnership (NP) on Youth Attainment and Transitions, existing youth, career and transitions programs funded by the Commonwealth will be restructured into two new, better targeted programs.

Clinicians and researchers at St Vincent’s Hospital and UNSW are now evaluating new Internet education and treatment programs for anxiety and depression. These programs are free, and are designed to help people understand their symptoms and how to start to get control over those symptoms.
