How Do We Keep Connected?

Are you an adolescent who is living with a chronic illness or the parent, carer, teacher, school leader or medical specialist for such a person?  Would you like to enter a competition to win a tablet computer?  If the answer to both of these questions is yes, you are the person I need!

Hi!  My name is Megan Jackson, and I am the mum of some wonderful children who are living with a range of different chronic illnesses.  Critical and chronic illnesses can be defined as medical conditions, which last longer than 3 months, and impact on daily living and learning.  I’m sure you can imagine that life in our house is frequently quite demanding.  Over time, I have figured out that one of the things which are most difficult to manage is the way that school doesn’t cope with my children’s absences.  I suspect that there are a lot of adolescents in Australia who are living with critical or chronic illness who have similar troubles with their schools.

I am doing some research into ways that schools could work better with adolescents living with critical or chronic illness.  I have created an online questionnaire, which you can find at:   at http://www.canberra.edu.au/faculties/estem/research/postgraduate (scroll to the bottom of the page to the section titled “Current Postgraduate Research Projects”).

All survey responses are of course confidential, though there is an option for providing your contact details if you would be willing to be interviewed later, and so that I can get the tablet computer to you if you win.  It would be great to have you involved with my research.  If you have any questions about the research, please feel free to contact me at: megan.jackson@canberra.edu.au  My PhD supervisor is Dr Chris Kilham, and she can be contacted at: chris.kilham@canberra.edu.au, should you wish to verify any details.

Cheers!

Megan Jackson
